EWURA (Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority) is a key regulatory body in Tanzania that oversees the energy and water sectors in the country. Established in 2001 under the EWURA Act, Cap 414, EWURA operates as an independent, multi-sector regulatory authority that aims to ensure that the services provided by utilities companies in Tanzania are reliable, affordable, and accessible to all. The energy sector regulated by EWURA includes electricity, petroleum, and natural gas, while the water sector includes water supply and sanitation. The authority is responsible for a range of activities, including setting tariffs, promoting competition, ensuring safety, protecting consumers’ interests, and promoting the efficient use of resources. Additionally, EWURA works to promote private sector participation in the energy and water sectors in Tanzania. EWURA is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the President of Tanzania, and the day-to-day operations of the authority are managed by the Director General and senior management team. The authority operates with a vision to be a world-class regulatory authority, promoting efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in the energy and water sectors in Tanzania. Through its activities, EWURA contributes to the development of the country’s economy, ensuring that essential services are accessible to all and are provided in a sustainable manner.
